FreeState is proud to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of Becky Savadkin, this week’s Community Icon! Becky Savadkin is a community member who has worked tirelessly to end LGBT homelessness. As LGBT Outreach Coordinator for the Mayor’s Office of Human Services, she evaluated the accessibility of city-funded shelters and worked collaboratively with service providers to implement best practices to creating a welcoming environment for LGBT clients. Becky provided trainings for staff and consultations for administrators to write quality non-discrimination policies, worked extensively with the transgender community, and created a standard for the city’s system that clients be given access to facilities based solely on gender identity. Over the past two years, Becky has seen an increase in the number of LGBT individuals accessing homeless services and has seen multiple providers begin to show willingness and enthusiasm to serve this vulnerable community.
