FreeState Justice

FreeState Justice is seeking an innovative leader to grow and build support for LGBTQIA+ Marylanders as a  Development Director. We are seeking someone to dramatically expand the fundraising efforts of growing legal services and advocacy non-profit.  Applicants should possess a deep passion for social justice and a commitment to bringing lived equality to Maryland’s LGBTQ community. Salary is $70,000 to $80,000 with an opportunity for performance-based commission.

Position Summary: The Development Director will work under the supervision of the Executive Director to meet annual revenue budgets (between $750k and $1M). Working closely with the Board and leadership, they will support efforts to expand a sustainable funding base and build strong relationships with individuals, corporations, and foundations both in the community and nationally. Additionally, they will oversee and coordinate communications and fundraising events in partnership with staff & the Board Events & Fundraising Committee. The Development Director will also be responsible for maintaining effective systems for stewardship, gift acknowledgment, recognition, receipt, and reporting.

Responsibilities:

Strategic and Operational Planning                                                                                                                                      

  • Provide vision, leadership, and strategic thinking to the short-term and long-term development plans in collaboration with the Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Set ambitious and achievable annual development goals and tasks
  • Meet all staff requirements for reporting, goal setting, and professional development

Donor Relations & Grants Management                                                                                                                                               

  • Manage donor portfolios of $150,000+ (individual) and $180,000+ (institutional), including development and maintenance of best practices and processes
  • Plan and execute short- and long-term development campaigns
  • Effectively manage up actions and communications to the Executive Director in coordination with the Administrative Manager
  • Prospect, vet, draft, and submit grant proposals and reports
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with grant program officers and foundations
  • Plan and execute high-quality events in collaboration with program staff or the Board Events & Fundraising Committee
  • Collaborate with the staff accountant to ensure proper fund accounting
  • Partner with Executive Director to coordinate the Board of Directors’ involvement in fundraising
  • Staff the Events Committee of the Board of Directors and support Board of Directors’ meeting

Communications                                                                                                                                                                          

  • Oversee the design, distribution, and documentation of development-related promotional materials.
  • Understand and build FreeState Justice’s local brand awareness/strength
  • Provide strategy & leadership in developing, executing, and evaluating communications strategies
  • Effectively manage regular communications while consistently maintaining high standards by delivering accurate information and tailored messaging to stakeholders
  • Develops high-quality, partner-specific stewardship materials and experiences that effectively speak to stakeholder motivations, address barriers, and position stakeholders

 

Qualifications:  An ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:

  • 3-5  years of successful experience in fundraising, sales, organizing, project management, or other related fields
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated ability to use data, metrics, and storytelling to communicate an organization’s mission, values, and work to a variety of stakeholders and audiences
  • Bachelor’s Degree OR 4-7 equivalent years of work experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving communities with low incomes, including experience working with transgender people, people of color, and other marginalized populations
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment with a proven ability to juggle multiple deadlines and tasks while staying organized
  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communications, public speaking, and interpersonal relations
  • Experience planning and executing successful, external campaigns including an ability to managing up and laterally within an organization
  • Demonstrated abilities in strategic thinking and creative problem solving
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with external stakeholders
  • Ability to travel throughout the state of Maryland, in compliance with local, state, and federal COVID-related guidelines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including MS Excel, & Google Workspace
  • Proficiency in CRM database use and management, Salesforce preferred but not required
  • Existing relationships within the Maryland funding community strongly desired
  • Event planning experience helpful but not required
  • Grant writing experience helpful but not required

Salary:  FreeState Justice offers a competitive salary, commensurate with experience.  The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $80,000 annually plus the opportunity for performance-based commission.

Schedule:  The Development Director will have flexible work hours between 9AM-5PM. Occasionally evening and weekend hours may be required. 

Location: Office is located in Baltimore, Maryland with a hybrid work environment. A minimum of one work day per week in office is desired but not required.
