FreeState Legal Project is proud to celebrate the work of Major Irene Burks, member of the Youth Equality Alliance. Major Burks was instrumental in the first ever training for law enforcement officials hosted by the Department of Justice on protecting the rights of transgender community. She is a decorated officer with the Prince George’s County Police Department, Maryland and currently serves as Patrol Commander, District II. Her philosophy of community oriented policing blends well with her passion for activism and equal rights. Irene volunteers with several civil rights organizations particularly those focused on equality, LGBTQ youth, and transgender rights. She received her Masters of Science in Management from Johns Hopkins University. Irene is a resident of Prince George’s County where she resides with her wife and two children.
