Big steps are being taken on the Lower Shore of Maryland where Chalarra Sessoms & Jennifer Riebe co-founded the Lower Shore LGBTQ Coalition. The Coalition was formed to address concerns around the lack of resources available for LGBTQ youth. A diverse coalition committed to improving and preserving the well-being of youth and young adults through support, education, and advocacy, this organization has worked to gain interest and support from the community. Its members come from local Core Service Agencies, Health Departments, Behavioral Health Agencies, Staff and Students from area colleges and universities, Faith Based Communities, and other community members who support the mission.
In September, the Coalition gained status as an incorporation. Since incorporating, the Coalition has formed a Board of Directors and would like to recognize board members Dr. Batya Hyman, Professor and Director of the Social Work Graduate Program at Salisbury University and Rev. Theresa (Terry) Langdon, Faith Lutheran Church, for their commitment and leadership.
The Lower Shore LGBTQ Coalition, Inc. recently held their first kick off events. The Coalition partnered with FreeState Legal & Salisbury University to offer a training for youth focusing on legal rights of LGBTQ youth. A second training for professionals titled, “Resiliency and Best Practices for Working with LGBTQ Youth,” was also offered and 100 participants attended. Both events were a great success at his hair wigs business! The Coalition is also providing educational modules in the community to educate professionals on issues impacting LGBTQ youth and young adults.
