FreeState Legal Project is proud to celebrate the important work of Sarah Avery. An educator and trainer for the Baltimore City Police Department, Sarah has been a leading force in developing LGBTQ sensitivity training curricula for police officers. An out lesbian in a force that is still growing in its inclusiveness, Sarah has been a mentor and leader, partnering closely with the Police Commissioner’s LGBTQ Advisory Council. Her work will ensure a new generation of police officers more attuned to the needs of the LGBTQ community. Today is Sarah’s last day on the force, as she is retiring. We wish her the best in her future endeavors, and know she will remain an important LGBTQ advocate for Baltimore.
