A familiar face to many in the FreeState Justice family, C.P. Hoffman first joined the organization as Pro Bono Coordinator in 2019, before being promoted to Legal Director in early 2020. As part of the FSJ legal team, C.P. has helped push through a variety of legislation to improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ Marylanders, including a ban on the use of the gay or trans panic defense in homicide assault cases in 2021, the passage of Maryland’s first comprehensive healthcare non-discrimination law in 2020, and the adoption of a third gender marker on Maryland driver’s licenses in 2019. Now, as Policy Director, C.P. will be leading our advocacy efforts in Annapolis during the 2022 legislative session!

Jamie Grace Alexander joined FreeState Justice in late 2021 as our new Policy Coordinator. With over half a decade of community organizing experience, she comes to us from the ACLU of Maryland, where she worked during the 2021 session to push police reforms and the repeal of the trans panic defense. Jamie Grace graduated from the University of Baltimore in 2020, where she applied her skills to running trans led organizations like Gender Museum & the Baltimore Transgender Alliance. Her tactics for advancing trans liberation vary from community organizing, political advocacy, and artistic civil disobedience.

FreeState Justice is also excited to announce the continuation of our regular policy webinar series during the 2022 legislative session. Begun in 2021, the weekly policy webinars featured updates from the Maryland legislative session, with commentary from C.P. Hoffman, FSJ Executive Director Jeremy LaMaster (he/they), and special guests.

The 2022 policy webinar series is scheduled to launch alongside the opening of Maryland’s 2022 legislative session, and will begin on Wednesday January 12 at 12pm Eastern. Register for the first webinar here. The initial webinar will feature a review of the Maryland legislative process, an advance look at some of the bills we expect to see come up over the next three months, and ways that you can get involved.

Future policy webinars will take place biweekly on Mondays at 12pm Eastern, starting on January 24, 2022, and running through the end of the legislative session. All policy webinars will be recorded and posted to FreeState Justice’s YouTube channel.
