FreeState Legal is proud to welcome Jabari Lyles to the team as the Outreach Specialist. Jabari has worked in the nonprofit sector for nearly ten years in various positions that emphasize his passion for education and LGBT activism. Jabari attended Towson High School in Towson, MD as a law and public policy magnet student and founded the school’s first Gay-Straight Alliance. During this time, he began working for the Baltimore chapter of The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN), a partner organization of FreeState Legal. Today, Jabari serves as Co-chairperson and Education Manager for GLSEN Baltimore. Jabari coordinates all educational programming offered by GLSEN Baltimore including anti-bullying lessons for youth, safe space trainings for educators and gay-straight alliance support in Baltimore City middle and high Schools. Jabari has also had the pleasure of working this past school year at Hampstead Hill Academy, a Baltimore City public charter school, as a health and life skills resource teacher. He hopes to bring a unique perspective to FreeState both as an educator and a nonprofit professional. Jabari currently attends the University of Maryland—Baltimore County and is in pursuit of his B.A. in mathematics with a concentration in secondary education. Jabari is a 2014 Sherman STEM Teacher Scholar at UMBC.
