Undergrad Internships:

Development & Communications Intern

FreeState Justice seeks an engaged, passionate, and media-savvy intern for the 2017 Fall semester in Development and Communications. The Development & Communications Intern will work directly under the supervision of the Executive Director. The Executive Director will work directly with the intern to identify particular areas of interest and assign exciting work in those areas. Qualified candidates will possess strong writing skills, be conversant in issues affecting low-income lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, be committed to approaching these issues with an intersectional lens, and possess skills outlined in the work description. This intern can expect to spend ~15 hours in the office per week.

Responsibilities: This intern will be responsible for:

Development 50%

  • Conduct ongoing research of foundations, corporations, law firms, and individual donors; identify new donors to approach; prepare written materials for donor meetings;
  • Assist with drafting, compiling, and editing grant reports, grant proposals, donor publications, donor thank-you letters, and other written materials as assigned;
  • Track donations and assist with donor correspondence; help merge donor databases, input donations, and prepare call lists for Executive Director;
  • Assist with planning fundraising events, including large galas and small house parties.

Communications 50%

  • Draft, compile, and maintain print and web materials, including organization publications, press releases, annual reports, web pages, social media posts, etc;
  • Maintain web presence, including updating the website; managing social media; promoting FreeState in the news; and assisting with designing infographics flyers, e-newsletters, action alerts, and other web-based materials;
  • Manage email database and email communications from FreeState;
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: An ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:

  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income communities, including experience working with transgender people, people of color, and youth;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including MS Excel;
  • Experience with email platforms such as Constant Contact, Salsa, or MailChimp;
  • Experience with database management;
  • Enthusiastic attitude and passionate about serving low-income LGBTQ people;
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented individual who takes initiative;
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced office environment, including well-developed time management skills;
  • Capacity to quickly problem solve.

Operations Intern

FreeState Justice seeks an energetic, organized, and detail-oriented intern for the 2017 Fall semester in Operations. The Operations Intern will work directly under the supervision of the Executive Director to identify ways to increase efficiency through creating better processes, improving delivery of service to clients, and helping create policies that expand the staff’s capacity to do more good. Qualified candidates will possess strong organizational skills, be committed to serving low-income LGBTQ+ people, be committed to using an intersectional lens, and possess skills outlined in the work description. This intern can expect to spend ~15 hours in the office per week.

Responsibilities: This intern will be responsible for:

Operations Management (40%)

  • Manage day-to-day operations of an active office environment and identify process improvement opportunities, including answering phones, managing inventory and purchasing, managing office correspondence, and maintaining office systems
  • Identify process improvements in day-to-day administrative necessities (e.g. bookkeeping, inventory/purchasing, accounts payable, etc.)
  • Manage, update, and maintain accurate financial records, including managing expenditures, reimbursements, and donations; preparing checks and invoices; and working with FreeState’s consultant accountant to produce accurate financial data
  • Assist the Executive Director in budget preparations and organizing event logistics

Legal Program Projects (40%)

  • Work with the Managing Attorney to scope and execute a project for standardizing client work flow
  • Conduct legal intake for potential clients and manage client relations
  • Maintain updated Pro Bono Attorney Network Contact List and prepare regular emails seeking to place cases with the network; serve as point of contact for Pro Bono Attorneys

Special Projects (20%)

  • Create human resources policies and employee handbook
  • Building out recruitment and hiring policies and strategies
  • Develop and maintain, in collaboration with the Executive Director, an organizational operations manual

 

Qualifications: An ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:

  • Deep understanding of issues that affect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities, especially those who are youth, low-income, or of color;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite;
  • A passion for getting and staying organized;
  • Systems-oriented thinking;
  • Complex problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong time management skills;
  • Self-motivated individual who takes initiative.
