FreeState Justice is proud and honored to support and serve LGBTQ people across the state of Maryland. Our efforts to advance state policies that promote LGBTQ equality and provide legal services to those in the LGBTQ community that need it the most contributes to Maryland’s ranking by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) as a state that is Working Toward Innovative Equality in their 2019 State Equality Index Report, the highest ranking, for the first time. Maryland is highlighted among the top 16 states and the District of Columbia for having a broad range of protections to ensure equality for LGBTQ people, including comprehensive non-discrimination laws, safer school policies, and healthcare access for transgender people. This ranking indicates that advocates in Maryland are focused on the implementation of laws and advance innovative legislation that addresses the needs of vulnerable LGBTQ populations.
The annual State Equality Index released by HRC is a comprehensive state-by-state report that provides a review of statewide laws and policies that affect LGBTQ people and their families. While we are excited to preserve and protect the state of our equality, more work must be done to ensure lived equality for the LGBTQ community in Maryland. In 2020, we will keep fighting for LGBTQ rights, especially over the upcoming months with the Maryland State Legislature in session. This year, we are working to support the banning of the transgender panic defense, advocate for non-discrimination and protection provisions in education and health care facilities, and continue to reform identity document practices and remove publication requirements among other policies.
We hope you will join FreeState Justice in our efforts to improve equality for all LGBTQ+ Marylanders in 2020. Consider making a donation today!
