The actions of the Carroll County School Board in recent days are shocking and extremely frustrating. Banning the expression of a person’s identity is always wrong, but doing so during Pride month — a month specifically meant to be a celebration of these identities — is especially harmful. This action is a clear act of discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community in Maryland and every marginalized student within that district. Over the following days, FreeState Justice will share resources about how the expression of Pride in schools can improve student health and well-being. Carroll County needs to know that there is empirical evidence showing how their actions directly harm the safety and development of the students they’re tasked with serving.
FreeState Justice will never stop fighting this kind of discrimination. If you would like to be a part of this fight, please consider donating to the Policy Advocacy Fund and learn about ways you can get involved with our life-saving work.
