Part-time Copywriter

FreeState Justice

Baltimore, MD

 

FreeState Justice is seeking an organized, creative, and collaborative part-time Copywriter who cares deeply about LGBTQ+ people to support the marketing and communication efforts of a growing legal services non-profit.  Applicants should possess a deep passion for social justice, enjoy writing,  and have a commitment to bringing lived equality to Maryland’s LGBTQ community.

 

Position Summary: The Copywriter  will work under the supervision of the Executive Director and Development Director to produce engaging, clear content for different channels such as website pages, print media, resource guides, and blog posts.  Their duties include researching, drafting, proofreading, and executing interesting written content that centers the issues of low-income LGBTQ+ Marylanders. They will be supported by interns, fellows, and other staff members in their communications activities..

Reports To: Executive Director, Development Director

Responsibilities:

 

  • Writing clear and error-free content for a website that reflects FreeState’s voice & values
  • Produce written materials in a variety of formats, including print collateral (press materials, brochures), Web and interactive content, speeches and other thought leadership pieces, considering responses from the target community
  • Meeting with team members to understand their communication needs, including message and target audience
  • Proposing copy concepts in an engaging way and carrying out projects once they are approved
  • Stay current on LGBTQIA+ issues and news then interpreting and turning them into persuasive copy concepts
  • Collaborating with social media team to integrate and synergize messaging 
  • Working with team members to edit and modify copy to meet their content expectations
  • Develop pro se resources and other resource guides for clients and community members
  • Understand target audiences and develop best practice guides for communications 
  • Present copy concepts and final deliverables to teams
  • Revise copy based on feedback/direction
  • Proofread written work and online content

 

Qualifications:  An ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:

 

  • 1-3  years of related work experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree OR 1-3 equivalent years of additional work experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving communities with low incomes, including experience working with transgender people, people of color, and other marginalized populations
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment with a proven ability to juggle multiple deadlines and tasks while staying organized
  • Demonstrated ability in written and oral communications, public speaking, and interpersonal relations
  • Demonstrated abilities in strategic thinking and creative problem solving
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including MS Excel, & Google Workspace
  • Proficiency in CRM database use and management, Airtable preferred but not required

 

Pay:   The pay range for this position is $21 to $28 per hour.

 

Schedule:  The Copywriter has a flexible schedule up to 9 hours per week. Weekly hours may be periodically reviewed and adjusted to fit organizational needs.

Location: Office is located in Baltimore, Maryland with a hybrid work environment. This position can be done remotely or hybrid.
