Leadership Team

To better serve LGBTQIA+ Marylanders, a collaborative team of directors leads FreeState Justice in implementing the vision, strategy, advocacy, and services of the organization. The LGBTQIA+ community comprises diversity along the lines of gender, race, class, sexuality, and other identities, and we strive for FreeState’s leadership philosophy to reflect that. A collective should inform our decision-making, accounting for diverse lived experiences, perspectives, education, and expertise. The diversity of our community requires a vision of shared leadership.

As FreeState Justice pivots and adapts to a shifting legal, economic, and social landscape, we are building a flatter, non-hierarchical, organizational theory that strives for consensus-based decision making and incorporates the voices and lived experiences of the community.

By decentralizing our leadership, we will be better equipped to support each other cross-functionally and strengthen our community through three main principles:

  1. Accountability – to ourselves, to each other, and to the community we serve.
  2. Authenticity – request honesty, strive for transparency, and build trust.
  3. Action – responsive and adaptive to the shifting needs of our community.

As a new endeavor, our Leadership Team will spend the next six weeks formalizing our philosophy and approach internally, while designing strategies for integrating the community into our principles. We invite the community and all stakeholders to participate in the process and look forward to connecting with you.

We look forward to the journey ahead as we adapt to the unprecedented challenges of our times.
